Portsmouth Regional incorporates treatment in Integrative Care Service
Reiki has become part of the culture of Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
The gentle hands-on treatment, thought by practitioners to help release the body's natural powers, is offered to the hospital's surgical patients during registration. It is also offered by certified practitioners in almost every in-patient service throughout the hospital.
Reiki came to Portsmouth Regional in 1995, when Patricia Alandydy, a longtime registered nurse in the operating room, approached the administration to begin incorporating integrative care services especially for surgical patients.
"The operating room is a scary place for most people," Alandydy said. "It's also a very technical environment with really no warmth for the patient. I wanted to bring back a sense of compassion and touch."
Reiki is based on the belief that spiritual energy can be channeled through a Reiki practitioner to heal the patient's spirit, through a mind-body connection. The word Reiki comes from Japanese terms that translate as "universal life energy."
During a Reiki session, the client is taught how to breathe to deeply relax. The practitioner then gently places his or her hands over the patient's head, shoulders, knees and feet. The patient is clothed and usually covered by a blanket.
The hands are intended to be a conduit for universal life energy, balancing energy within and around the body.
Portsmouth Regional was the first hospital in the country to offer Reiki to its patients, Alandydy said.
Today, the hospital has an Integrative Care Service that includes Reiki, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, nutrition and even a Relaxation Hotline for patients, families and staff. The caller has the choice of a few minutes of guided breathing work or relaxing music to just take a time-out to refocus.
"There is a dual purpose to this service," Alandydy said of the Integrative Care Service. "The first is to support the staff and the work they do. The second is to support the patients and their families."
Staff are also treated to regular Reiki treatments, said Christine Niles, one of three Reiki practitioners on staff at Portsmouth Regional.
"We want our caregivers to be at their best, Niles said. "Not only does it help them to relax and renew their energy, they also know what Reiki is and can suggest it to their patients."
And it's not just the nursing staff. All employees are offered the chance to have regular Reiki treatments.
Any inpatient can ask for Reiki and one of the staff or a trained volunteer will come to their room.
Reiki is also offered in the oncology clinic and during breast biopsies.
"During a treatment, time seems to stand still and everything else seems to fall away," Niles said. "It's people caring for each other."
Linda Leavitt of Portsmouth can vouch for the effects of Reiki.
The 62-year-old woman was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer three years ago. It has metastasized to her bones and she is currently undergoing radiation therapy.
"The first time I had a Reiki treatment, I was so relaxed and I drifted off to sleep," Leavitt said.
"I felt as though (the practitioner's) hands were still there."
Leavitt said Reiki makes her feel "a little like my body is healing."
Alandydy said the hospital also offers a Bridges to Surgery guided imagery program.
"You surrender so much as a patient going into surgery," she said. "And you are separated from your family and loved ones. Patients feel a loss of control and this empowers them."
The Bridges to Surgery gives patients a CD to learn techniques to cope with stress and fears prior to surgery.
"Patients are taught to breathe deeply and think positive thoughts," Alandydy said. "The anesthesiologist participates by repeating affirmations to the patient as they are going to sleep, and this is carried over into the recovery room."
Of course, Reiki also helps patients relax before their surgery and is used on the post-surgical unit to help with anxiety and pain management.
"It's become such a part of the hospital's culture that doctors even write it as part of their orders for their patients," Alandydy said.
