Reiki is a Japanese healing art focusing on increasing the energy one has in life.  “Reiki is a free service we offer to patients to promote healing, relaxation, sleep, and to reduce pain,” said Jill Howell, MA, ATR-BC, Medical Art Therapist with Pocono Medical Center.  This service really focuses on meeting the patient’s needs and is truly all about enhancing quality of life.”

More than 1.2 million adults reported that they had used an energy healing therapy such as Reiki, according to the 2007 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Reiki sessions are given either while the patient is sitting or lying down and seek to target all important areas.

The sessions usually last between 10 to 30 minutes and involve the certified Reiki Practitioners laying hands on or slightly above the patient.  The patient may feel warm, comfortable, or at peace.  A tingling sensation, coolness (if there is a fever), calmness, and sleep may follow.  The patient is always told that there is no right or wrong feeling since each one is unique to that individual.

The team of certified Reiki Practitioners provide sessions in the hospital and at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center.  Patients can receive Reiki through two avenues either by being referred by a physician, nurse, or nurse technician, or one of the Reiki team members may visit a patient floor and advise the staff they are offering a session.  All sessions are documented in the patient’s chart and shared with the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Department.

Some of the documented results have included pain levels significantly lowered from an 8 to a 2 on a pain scale of 1-10, blood sugar levels lowered from 334 to 254 in twenty minutes, and even a persisting headache lasting for one week was gone in twenty minutes.
